Crowns are used to restore and enhance teeth that are damaged. A crown, also referred to as a “cap”, is used to entirely cover a damaged tooth. A crown not only strengthens a tooth, but it can dramatically improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, color, and alignment.
Crowns may be used to:
- Replace a large filling when there is little tooth structure remaining
- Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Restore a tooth that has already fractured
- Attach a bridge
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment
A bridge is one method to fill the space created by missing teeth. A bridge is one or more artificial teeth that are cemented into place using the teeth on either side for support. This is an option for filling the space created by a missing tooth. A bridge replaces the missing tooth, both functionally and cosmetically. Bridge work is as much an art as it is an exact science. The materials used may be gold alloys, porcelain bonded to metal alloy, or all ceramic material made to match your natural tooth color. The choice of material depends on requirements for strength, wear, and esthetics.
A special 3D camera is placed in the mouth and several 3D photos are taken at various angles. This allows us the ability to digitally capture an exact replication of the teeth and transfer that information directly to the lab. This is beneficial because it is more precise, shortens lab turn around times, and eliminates the feeling of gagging or claustrophobia some patients feel during traditional impressions.
In some cases, we can make crowns, inlays, or onlays in as little as 2 hours (see description of same day crown procedure).
We have invested in a CAD/CAM crown machine for our in-office laboratory. This machine utilizes 3 dimensional technology to fabricate crowns, inlays, and onlays. We are pleased to announce that these crowns can be fabricated and delivered for your convenience in one day!* This means less time in a temporary crown for you and fewer visits to the dentist. This machine uses top of the line ceramics to produce beautiful, long-lasting results.
* Please let the staff know if you are interested in having the crown fabricated and delivered during the same visit when you schedule your appointment, so that we may allot enough time in the schedule.
